Agency Details:
Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups
The Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups will harness the power of the generations by mobilizing individuals and organization to shape a better society. Our strategic theme is Advocacy for the Next Generation.
Description:
A statewide nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, CWAG is made up of individuals and member groups that represents over 125,000 people in Wisconsin. Born out of grassroots activism, CWAG formed as the voice of seniors in Wisconsin after 4,000 individuals marched on the state Capitol in 1977 to improve senior conditions in the state. Today, we work together as productive, equal partners providing a variety of programs, services, advocacy, legal services and education to Wisconsin's senior citizens and to future generations. CWAG is organized into nine geographic districts and is directed by a governing board made up of seniors. CWAG's Member Services team focuses on leadership development, information sharing and the empowerment of seniors to further establish and maintain CWAG's grassroots advocacy efforts. In addition, Member Services also provides community outreach through information and training on the organization and its services, assistance to members with the high cost of prescription drugs and serves as a consumer advocate. CWAG’s Legal Services is a nationally-recognized provider of legal resources and services to Wisconsin seniors and professionals who work with seniors. A staff of attorneys, benefit specialists, and support staff provide training and assistance to benefit specialists in 65 of Wisconsin's 72 counties. CWAG houses the Dane County Benefit Specialist Program providing direct legal assistance to seniors in Dane County with problems and questions on public benefits and other elder law issues. Legal Services operates a guardianship support project, a financial empowerment project, a senior Medicare Patrol project, and works on issues of consumer protection, public policy, elder abuse prevention, Medicare integrity, pension rights and other legal issues important to senior citizens and their families.
