Adult Basic Literacy Tutor

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on June 2, 2009

We are seeking flexible and patient volunteers with three hours available each week. In three hours a week, you can help adult learners gain reading and writing skills directly related to their life goals: getting a driver's license, finding a better job, reading notes from their child's teacher, or understanding instructions from their doctor. Our learner's each have different goals in mind - our tutors are there to help them build their English skills and confidence in order to reach those goals!

No teaching experience is needed - training and support are provided.

Meeting times and locations are very flexible; matches are made primarily on coordinating schedules and the ability to meet in the same general geographic area.

Tutors will attend a one-hour information session and nine-hour tutor training. After being matched with a learner, tutors will meet with them for 2 hours a week and spend about 1 additional hour each week preparing. A six-month commitment to the program is required.

Tutors must be at least 18 years of age.
