VOLUNTEER for Ride the Drive!

Come celebrate Madison's commitment to healthy, active lifestyles by riding, walking, skating, or strolling along some of our city's most beautiful streets. FREE, open–to–the–public, and a family event with plenty of activities and entertainment along the 6–mile route for kids and adults of all ages, Ride the Drive is a whole new way to experience our great city.

Volunteering for Ride the Drive is a great way to help make this a successful event and have a lot of fun at the same time!

Over 250 volunteers are needed for Ride the Drive.  As a volunteer you will receive a really cool Ride the Drive t-shirt, an informational training, snacks and so many smiles it will make your summer!

Thousands of people will be out enjoying walking, biking, running and rolling in the traffic-free streets.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Get the Word Out: Dates to be determined

  • Help us inform and notify everyone, especially our 'event neighbors' along and near the route for Ride the Drive, about this great new event in Madison. We will need volunteers to help 'flyering' the isthmus with information about the event.

Event Set-up: Day of the event , 7– 9am

  • Help set up tables, chairs and canopies. Hang banners and signage.

Art/Activity: Assistance throughout the day of event

  • Assist participating groups and individuals to set up and take down activity areas along the route. Provide direction and information about activity. Encourage participation.

Intersection Marshals: Throughout day of event

  • Help set up or take down barricades at your intersection, assist with participation traffic flow, answer participants' questions, and redirect neighborhood traffic. Some volunteers will have the added duty of counting participants at different intervals.

Event Greeters/Closers: 7am – 10am, 9:30am-12:30pm, 12pm-3pm

  • Help set up and take down comfort stations, answer people's questions, and hand out brochures.
     
  • Help take down tables, chairs and canopies. Remove signage and banners. Basic clean up of the event area.

Bike Parking Valets – Saris - Throughout day of event
 

  • Oversee bike parking; check people's bikes in and out of the corral.

Photographers

  • Must be able to take digital photos on the route and pass them on to us by the end of the week via disc, memory card or uploaded to Flickr with high resolution. We will provide you with a shot list. Getting us the pictures by the end of the week is essential.

Mechanics: Throughout day of event

  • Roving mechanics must have introductory mechanical skills and be able to do on-the-spot basic repair, adjustments and tire changes. Mechanics bring their own basic tool kit, a cell phone and are proactive about providing support on the route. We will provide a mechanic vest for you to wear on the route so you are recognized as a mechanic. We will have bike shops located in parks and along the route if more advanced mechanical work is needed.

Bike Ambassadors: 7am – 10am; 9:30am-12:30pm; 12pm – 3pm

  • Bike the route making sure that everything is progressing smoothly and safely in your designated 1 mile ride zone. Communicate with Ride the Drive participants, volunteer captains and intersection marshals to maintain the safety of the route and enhance participant experience. At the start of the event and throughout the day, make sure that intersections and signage are functioning properly and the route is free of debris. At the close of the event, bike the route to make sure that intersections are ready to be opened to cars. Bike Ambassadors will need to use their personal cell phone for communication during the event.
