American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Description:
We will accomplish our mission by providing research to eliminate cancer as a major health problem, and education to create awareness of risk, prevention, and early detection. Much of our research dollars are raised through our signature fundraiser, Relay for Life, and various community events throughout the nation. Other ways we complete our goals are to provide advocacy to influence laws and service to help patients and their families cope with cancer. Programs and services are available to people touched by cancer in every community in the US. ACS also provides an in-depth cancer resource center at www.cancer.org and can offer cancer information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-ACS-2345.

History:
Since 1913, ACS has had the same goal of eliminating cancer. We have funded over 40 Nobel Laureates early in their careers that has resulted in many of the major cancer research breakthroughs of the century. ACS is highly rated by charity "watchdog" agencies such as the Better Business Bureau. We are continuing our progress in finding a cure for cancer by nearly nine million survivors alive today.
