Warren Center for Communication & Learning
Logo

The Warren Center's mission is: The Warren Center provides evaluations, therapies and technologies in the areas of speech, language development and hearing to the children and adults of Eastern and Central Maine.

Description:
The Warren Center provides Bangor and the surrounding communities with professional speech, language and hearing services. The Warren Center works with many Head Starts, preschools, local schools and other non-profits - as well as individuals of all ages. Our programs are diverse - our "Regional Hearing Aid Bank" refurbishes previously-worn behind-the-ear hearing aids and distributes the aids to adults who could not afford an aid. We also offer infant hearing screenings, hearing aid services and sales, pediatric speech, as well as hearing screenings at nursing homes, businesses and select events.

History:
The Warren Center was founded by the Junior League of Bangor in 1961 as the Bangor Regional Speech and Hearing Center after a measles epidemic hit Central Maine in the 1950's. The disease left many children deaf or with significant hearing impairments. The Center's first home was in the front room of a Hammond Street home, staffed entirely by volunteers. The Center later was known as the Center for Communication & Learning, and many people remember it from its Texas Avenue offices. The Warren Center was renamed in honor of the family of Bangor Daily News publisher Richard Warren, whose family has been involved with the Center since it began in 1961.

Since it's inception, the Warren Center has expanded its services from primarily helping hearing and speech problems of the very young to offering services and support for people of all ages.
