The Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford is dedicated to providing a stimulating and wholesome environment which promotes social, educational, character and physical development for children and young adults ages 7-18 years. The Boys & Girls Club movement is an affiliation of local "autonomous" organizations and the National Boys & Girls Clubs of America working together to assist youth from all socio-economic backgrounds to develop the positive qualities required to become responsible citizens and leaders.
Description:
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford's services offers a myriad of positive and constructive programs and activities serving over 1,400 boys and girls annually, from multi-cultural/multi-racial backgrounds. The Club focuses on activities and services that will strengthen each youth's self-efficiency and self-esteem by providing rich and rewarding alternatives to the negative choices of substance abuse, teen suicide, dropping out of school, domestic violence and other social ills. Services that we provide are Transportation Outreach, Computer Learning, Substance Abuse education, academic tutorial assistance, Summer Day Camp, athletic competition & Field trips/Tours, are available to the youth Monday through Friday 2:00pm - 9:00pm and Saturdays 10:00am - 3:00pm. Summer Camp operation is Monday - Friday 9:00am - 4:00pm throughout the summer months. With expansion of its facility the Boys & Girls Club is now focusing on a more family orientated facility that will allow for adult membership. The expansion includes a new gymnasium, as well as, a new educational wing that houses educational classrooms, a computer technology center, a state-of-the-art fitness center and games room.
History:
Incorporated in 1871, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford, originally known as the Union for Good Works, was formed to meet the needs of boys from low-income families. The Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford is the third oldest Boys & Girls Club in the United States. In 1987, the Club opened its doors to girls and officially changed its name to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford. Actually, the Club had begun serving girls and young women some ten years prior to the mandate.
