St. Anthony Of Padua Food Pantry
We are a Church in the city of New Bedford located in one of the city's poorest neighborhoods. Many people living in the immediate area do not have a car and must rely on public transportation. We provide groceries, a warm meal and good used clothing to those in need.
Description:
We are open every Thursday from 12 noon until 2 pm. We work under the guidelines of the Boston Food Bank. All food is donated. We give out two days of groceries to each family. A warm meal is provided for lunch and we collect good used clothing that is distributed. Volunteers start at nine am organizing all food donations, bagging groceries, stocking shelves, preparing food to be served at lunch. All clothing received must be sorted and put out for distribution. Help is always needed to carry out heavy bags of food. Many families speak portuguese or spanish, we are always in need of translators. We usually finish cleaning up by two o'clock.
History:
Our food pantry started approximately 6 years ago by Sisters who also taught in St. Anthony's School. We have grown from helping thirty families a week to over two hundred families and the need continues to increase.
