History:
The council was organized in 1917, serving the Greater Providence area. Throughout the 1930s, 1940s and subsequent decades additional towns and communities were added to the growing council. In 2001 the Moby Dick Council, serving the southeastern Massachusetts area, merged with Narragansett Council. Today the council territory includes the State of Rhode Island and 18 communities in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The Narragansett Council provides the Scouting program to 19,073 youth, including over 1,300 at-risk, marginalized, and “inner city” youth within the Scout Reach Program component. Over 5,000 volunteers work with our youth in nearly 430 program sites (Scout Units) throughout the council territory.

Providing community service is at the “core” of the Scouting program. Annually the Scouting for Food Good Turn collects over 320,000 pounds of donated food that is then distributed throughout the council territory to dozens of food pantries and kitchens. Scouting for Food is the largest food collection event for the Rhode Island Food Bank. 247 Scouts earned Scouting’s highest award, the Eagle Scout rank. Their collective community service performed, as part of their requirement, amounts to over 27,600 hours donated to non-Scouting organizations.
