To increase the organized capacity of people living in our area to care for one another.

Description:
United Way of Greater New Bedford programs are developed and implemented based on community need, unduplicated efforts, and the likelihood of collaborative partnerships to strengthen credibility and outreach. We support 31 agencies that provide programs and services that effectively address critical needs in our community. Since, 1998, we have worked with our agencies in implementing a system of measuring program outcomes that demonstrate an agencies ability to procure positive change for program participants.

History:
The United Way was founded in 1953, then called the United Fund, by business leaders who wanted to support the social service agencies in the area. By providing a way for their employees to contribute by making an easy payroll deduction insured that agencies would be able to provide necessary programs for the residents of the area. Agencies stayed busy caring, educating, providing shelter and food, while those in the work place contributed the funds needed for their continued success. Over the years the United Way of Greater New Bedford has continued to campaign for the dollars that support the now 31 agencies that make up the United Way. Concentrating on the needs of the community, the United Way has developed programming not duplicated based on community need. The Community Building Mini-Grants program, Hunger Commision of Southeastern MA, and the newly created Volunteer Center are programs that target specific groups or issues whose needs are unmet by any other program or organization locally.
