Schwartz Center for Children
For over 60 years, The Schwartz Center for Children has provided education, therapy, medical care and family support for Southeastern Massachusetts children with multiple disabilities and complex medical needs. During this time, we have enriched the lives of more than 20,000 children, and we have endeavored to help these children reach their greatest potential in a loving and nurturing environment.
Description:
The Schwartz Center currently has five core programs serving children birth through age 21.
The Early Intervention program evaluates and provides services to infants and young children birth to age 3 years old who are at risk for delay or are delayed in the development of speech/language, learning, motor skills, vision and hearing, social interaction and self-help skills.
The Day School program is a licensed Department of Education school which services students from 3-21 in a medical, educational and therapeutic environment. The school operates year-round. Afterschool programming is available to families for a fee.
The Adolescent Living Skills program provides life skills to adolescents ages 10-21 in an afterschool program. This program provides participants opportunities to practice the skills they need for daily living and to enjoy exploring the community with friends. Activities include money skills, homemaking, career exploration, and vocational training.
The Outpatient Rehabilitation Program serves children and adolescents at the Center as well as at participating schools, child care centers, and other community sites. Therapy provided includes speech and language, physical, occupational, and sensory integration therapy.
The Regional Consultation Program provides child specific consultation and training for families, Early Intervention, child care providers, and the general community throughout Southeastern Massachusetts.
The Regional Consultation Program promotes the inclusion of children with complex care requirements, multiple disabilities, and/or extensive medical health needs.
History:
The work of the Schwartz Center for Children began in 1947 with a group of parents, lead by Agnes "Posa" Raposa. Seeking education and treatment for their children with cerebral palsy, they started the New Bedford Cerebral Palsy Council.
In response to the children's needs, the Council soon added therapy, a summer day camp, and a program for young children. As the reputation of these services spread, parents sought care for children with a variety of disabilities.
Today the Council operates the Schwartz Center for Children, Southeastern Massachusetts' only independent, community based provider of therapy, education, developmental, and social services for children.
Over the years, the Center has moved from locations such as the "poor farm", Sol e Mar, and St. Luke's Hospital, finding its home on Rockdale Ave. in the 60's. Over 20,0000 children and families have received services since the founding of the agency.
