Horizons for Homeless Children- Southeast Region
The mission of Horizons for Homeless Children is to improve the lives of homeless children and their families. We provide homeless children in Massachusetts with the nurturing, stimulation and opportunities for early education and play that all children need to learn and grow in healthy ways.
Description:
Horizons for Homeless Children touches the lives of hundreds of homeless children each week by providing early care and education in our Community Children's Centers in Greater Boston and creating Playspaces in shelters throughout Massachusetts. Horizons for Homeless Children is a leader in advocating for homeless children and their families. At local, state and federal levels, we promote and support policies that benefit homeless children and their families. Together with other service providers, we are building a strong foundation for homeless children and moving their families to self sufficiency.
History:
Horizons for Homeless Children (formerly The Horizons Initiative) was founded in 1988 as an independent non-profit organization, dedicated exclusively to serving homeless children and their families. The Playspace Programs, founded in 1990, serve homeless children in two unique ways: 1.) In collaboration with residents and staff at each shelter, we design and equip age-appropriate "kid-friendly" spaces called "Playspaces." 2.) We recruit train and place volunteers in shelter Playspaces to engage the children in fun and educational play that benefits their growth and development.
