Volunteers will provide essential emergency assistance such as food, clothing and shelter to victims of natural or man-made disasters. American Red Cross training will be provided free of charge for all registered volunteers. Disaster Relief positions available may include: Disaster Action Teams (DAT) members are available on call to respond to disasters, including natural disasters, house fires, hazardous materials spills Must be willing to be on call for a short period of time. Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers will be on call to respond to local disasters during their assigned shift. Daytime shifts are 8:30am to 4:30pm and evening shifts are from 4:30pm to 8:30am. Members will choose their preferred shift and will confirm their availability with their Team Leader each week. Damage assessment workers evaluate damage to property after a disaster. Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) drivers use the ERV as a mobile office and feeding kitchen to bring supplies to disaster workers and victims. Team Leaders are trained to lead a DAT on the scene of a disaster. Family Services workers provide emergency financial assistance to disaster victims. Interpreters work in shelters and at disaster scenes, to assist in communicating with non-English speakers, particularly the Spanish-speaking community. Mass care workers feed and care for evacuees or assist with feeding of support agencies during large fires or other disasters. Disaster Mental Health workers monitor the emotional well-being of disaster workers, victims and volunteers. Emergency Dispatch (not on scene) relays emergency calls to Team Leaders, initiating the response. Client Assistance Card Activators (not on scene) activate debit relief cards through an on-line computer program. Shelter Services Disaster Health Services workers give aid in shelters. Shelter managers are responsible for daily shelter functions during a disaster. Shelter workers help support an operational shelter. Trailer Towers tow the relief materials to the shelter. Community disaster education ( CDE ) coordinators schedule speakers for presentations as requested. Educators/public speakers give presentations or attend community fairs as requested to educate the public about threats an d h ow to respond to them. This might also include hazard analysis and mitigation for specific geographic areas.A special curriculum called Masters of Disasters is used to teach children and youth in grades K-12. Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) workers serve in the various emergency positions listed and may travel throughout the United States helping with national disasters. Preparedness workers help prepare for disasters by doing things like surveying facilities for shelter use, inventory of supplies, stocking shelter kits, working on capacity building projects, recruiting DAT volunteers. Special projects coordinators develop their own projects or work in specific areas of their choice such as public relations or grant writing. Emergency Operations Liaisons work in the Emergency Operations center and provide communication between Red Cross and other agencies.
All applicants must complete a volunteer application, an American Red Cross volunteer Open House and complete a background check to become a Red Cross volunteer. Must be able to: work in a multicultural environment assisting a diverse client population under minimal supervision exercise good judgment and work well with others remain calm in a crisis situation and identify clients' immediate needs attend scheduled training sessions and team meetings must be at least 18 years of age to be on the scene of a disaster lift 10 pounds or more stand for long periods of time
