History:
Marrakech, Inc. began providing community based residential and independent living skills, training to women with mild retardation in 1971. Although we now provide residential, employment, community experience, and other services to men and women with a much wider range of disabilities, our commitment to community belonging has only changed to the extent that it has become stronger. Marrakech, Inc. was founded in 1971 by two Yale University undergraduate students who, through community volunteerism, saw people with disabilities being treated differently in our society and dared to ask "why?" When these persons were identified as being unable to live in the community, the students pressed further by asking "why not?" As an answer to these questions, they formed organization to assist individuals with disabilities to enter the community and to establish themselves as valued and contributing persons of that community. Initially, Marrakech provided residential services to women with mental retardation. The organization expanded to provide services to other people who face challenges other than developmental disabilities. Over the years, Marrakech, Inc. has assisted persons with various needs to gain community belonging and self sufficiency by connecting them to housing, employment, living skills building opportunities, friends and social outlets, treatment and other tools for personal growth. Today, Marrakech, Inc. serves over one thousand people a year. The services continue to focus on helping each one to achieve an accepted status as a community member who is first and foremost a person.
