Agency Details:
GEM: Girl-Empowered Mentoring and Magazine
GEM's mission is two-fold:
- To aid female high school students in the production of a magazine about women's issues whose content is wholly controlled by them.
- To form strong mentoring relationships between Yale women and motivated female New Haven high school students, enabling both groups to become a more aware and efficacious citizenry.
Description:
GEM provides female New Haven high school students with a positive forum for exploring issues that are important to them as young women. These students use the writing they worked on in our meetings throughout the year to produce a magazine. At a typical GEM session, we begin with a topic to provoke thought and discussion as a group. We then break down into one-on-one mentoring and workshop sessions, when the students work on their magazine articles. We also organize trips to Yale in order for the students to meet with professors or college students who have similar academic or other interests.
History:
This is GEM's second year in its current form and first year working with students at the Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School.
