Description:
WHEAT distributes food M-F between 2:30-4:30. West Haven residents also have access to St. Raphael's Project Mothercare clinic on M&T. West Haven residents who qualify may receive rent or utility assistance. Finally, WHEAT is an outreach center for food stamps; anyone from New Haven County may come every other Tuesday to meet with a DSS outreach coordinator to get help signing up for food stamps.
History:
WHEAT was founded in 1975 by the West Haven Clergy Assn. as a private charity to help feed West Haven residents in need. WHEAT was only a food pantry at that time. Over the next 30 years, we have expanded our services to include emergency funds, medical care, referrals, etc. The board of directors has evolved to inlclude community members as well as representatives from interfaith congregations.
