Charlie's Closet
Charlie’s Closet is a medical equipment clearinghouse. We accept donations of used equipment and then distribute the clean medical equipment to Guilford and shoreline area residents for a purchase price of $1.00. Any one in need of equipment, regardless of age or insurance status can receive the equipment without red-tape
Description:
Charlie’s Closet takes donations of medical equipment, cleans the equipment, checks it for safety and then provides the equipment to anyone requesting it. The equipment that we provide ranges from walker, commodes and cane to hospital beds. Large pieces, such as hospital beds, are sometimes delivered and set up in our client’s home by our volunteers. For liability reasons, the clients sign a release form and pay a fee of $1 for each piece of equipment. In fiscal year 2007-2008 we served 1538 clients.
History:
In January 1998, the GIM Board president asked the staff to locate a stair glide for a friend. From this request, Charlie’s Closet began with its mission of lending used medical equipment. By December 1998, Charlie’s Closet was providing equipment for loan on a regular basis. As the program grew, volunteers were recruited to handle the many request and the Town of Guilford supported the effort be providing a trailer for equipment storage. In 2007 the GIM Board hired a Charlie’s Closet director and built a storage barn on Guilford Housing Authority Property with a grant from the State of Connecticut
