American Red Cross - South Central CT Chapter

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. It does this through services that are consistent with its congressional charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross movement.

Description:
The American Red Cross is a non-profit humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by the principles of the International Red Cross movement. It provides emergency food, clothing, and shelter to disaster victims; supplies blood to hospitals to meet the medical needs of patients; educates the public in health/safety programs; transports individuals to and from medical appointments; and operates a food bank program

History:
The Red Cross was founded by a Swiss banker named Henry Dunant in 1859 after he witnessed a gruesome battle. He decided that there needed to be an organization that provided relief to victims of war regardless of what side they were on. This idea grew throughout the country and in 1905 Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross has been in Connecticut since this time and in 1959 we moved to 703 Whitney Ave. Over the years our programs expanded into disaster relief, international work, providing blood, keeping military families connected and teaching people live saving skills.
