Calvin Hill Day Care Center

The Calvin Hill Day Care Center and the Kitty Lustman-Findling Kindergarten are private, non-profit, model educational preschool programs accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. These programs provide high quality, developmentally informed, affordable early childhood education to more than sixty three through six year olds from the greater New Haven area. Fees are based on a sliding tuition scale,and the Center's families come from a diverse ethnic, racial, and economic background. The curriculum is rich in opportunities to for children and adults to create, learn and grow. The Center provides training for students and others interested in working with young children. The staff enjoys collaborating with volunteers, and is highly experienced and trained.

Description:
Calvin Hill Day Care Center serves about forty three to five year olds, as well as twenty kindergarteners. It participates in the New Haven School readiness program, providing additional scholarships to low income families in addition to its sliding scale tuition. The staff of fourteen teachers is experienced in early childhood education, and many of the teachers have been at Calvin Hill for more than fifteen years. Parent involvement is an important component of the program, which is run by a board of directors made up of current and past parents and community members. The director holds a joint appointment at Yale University's Child Study Center and Calvin Hill serves as a training and practicum site for undergraduate and graduate students from the areas colleges. The Center is open 11 months of the year from 8 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

History:
Calvin Hill Day Care Center was started in 1971 by Yale University undergraduates in response to a union employee strike. The Center was established in 1971 to provide high quality affordable child care to families of Yale and the New Haven communities. Founders are still actively involved, as are parents and alumni of Calvin Hill.The Center is housed in a Yale University building, a converted firehouse on Highland Street in New Haven.
