United Way of Greater New Haven
United Way of Greater New Haven provides an organized, accountable community fundraising system which motivates individuals and institutions to invest themselves and their resources to improve the well-being of the region. United Way identifies, prioritizes and communicates community strengths and needs to align resources, both financial and human, with these needs.
Description:
Through a vast network of volunteers and local charities, United Way organizations help meet the health and human care needs of millions of people every day. United Way's 110-year history is built on the proven effectiveness of local organizations helping people in their own communities. United Way of Greater New Haven has been meeting community needs in the nine towns of greater New Haven for over 80 years. Through our network of partner agencies, volunteers and community leaders, United Way takes a leadership role in addressing health and human service issues that face the New Haven region. Through a single annual community-wide campaign, United Way volunteers raise funds to benefit more than fifty programs at forty local health and human service agencies. Experienced volunteers and professionals who research and identify effective programs that address community issues invest dollars raised in the campaign in vital community programs. In addition to our fundraising efforts, United Way of Greater New Haven also develops special initiatives and collaborations with other community groups to meet high priority needs. All resources are focused to provide solutions for the most pressing issues in our community.
History:
In 1887, religious leaders in Denver founded the Charity Organizations Society to coordinate local services and a single fundraising campaign. That was the start of a movement of similar locally-based organizations, sometimes called Community Chest and sometimes called United Way. Each of these is independent and sets its own policies. One of those organizations was United Fund of Greater New Haven, which was founded in 1919. In 1971, it merged with Community Foundation of Greater New Haven to form United Way of Greater New Haven, which today invests in over 50 critical health and human service programs in the nine-town New Haven area.
