History:
ALSO-Cornerstone, Inc. was created by the official merger on January 23, 2001, of Alcohol Services Organization of South Central Connecticut, Inc. (ALSO) and Cornerstone, Inc., two longtime social service agencies well known in the Greater New Haven area, following an 18-month period of affiliation. The merger of these two respected leaders in nonprofit behavioral health services has expanded their capacity to care for those in need of mental health and substance abuse services. ALSO, Inc. was founded in 1978 to provide services to individuals and families whose lives have been affected by alcoholism. Cornerstone, Inc. was founded in 1970 to assist individuals with psychiatric disabilities to live as independently as possible in the community and to enhance public understanding and support for service to those who suffer from mental illness. Together the two agencies form a complementary union that provides a range of prevention, treatment and recovery services as well as supportive housing services for individuals and families who are severely disabled with mental illness, substance abuse, or both.
