Description:
Community Soup Kitchen is a non-profit agency that provides free, nutritious meals to anyone in need. The Soup Kitchen receives no city, state or federal money for our operation. We rely upon the community to support our mission. We have been in operation since 1977. In 2008, together with our associates at the Saint Luke's Lunch Program for Women and Children, and our five breakfast sites, we provided 64,911 meals. We also act as a host site for the Hill Health Center who offers health services to our guests. We also act as a work site for clients of American Retarded Citizens.
History:
Community Soup Kitchen has been in operation since 1977. The organization was started by a small group of Yale students and their spouses. Now the organization is truly a community effort. Members of the Board of Directors and volunteers come from throughout the New Haven area and from as far away as Cheshire and Killingworth.

Overall Experience

Welcoming, needed, efficient, well-organized, safe, in-and-out.

My girlfriend and I volunteered during lunch (approx. 11:30-1:30) once a week for five weeks, helping to serve the food and clean up. The paid and volunteer staff and dining room director were great to work with, the customers were friendly, and the experience kept us in touch with the variety of persistent, urgent needs of New Haven's community members.
