Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven

Literacy Volunteers is a non-profit educational organization that trains, certifies, and supports volunteer tutors who work with adults who need help with Basic Literacy or with English for Speakers of Other Languages. Free instruction is offered in small group settings throughout the Greater New Haven area, and in one-to-one tutoring sessions.

Description:
Over the past 30 years, our tutors have touched the lives of thousands of individuals, giving them the gift of literacy. This gift translates into hundreds more gifts as our successful students have shared their gift with an entire generation.

Now our tutors are faced with the ever increasing challenge of teaching non-English speaking students, not only to read, but to speak and understand English. Our staff have embraced this challenge. We have recruited and trained many talented tutors. Realizing that the only way for our ever swelling international population to be incorporated into all aspects of our society is to be able to communicate effectively, we have added many small-group English as a Second Language programs to complement our basic literacy skills program.

History:
Literacy Volunteers was established in 1981 as an all volunteer organization. Since then it has become a fully accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America, the national Literacy organization, with paid staff and 501c3 status. Literacy Volunteers has trained and supported hundreds of volunteer literacy tutors who have taught thousands of adult students. Outcomes are measured by pre and post testing students with the standardized CASAS test.
