Mutual Housing Association of South Central Connecticut dba NeighborWorks New Horizons develops, owns, and operates permanently affordable housing that builds strong, healthy, and vibrant communities through active resident and community participation and leadership.

Description:
NWNH is a resident-led organization with 40% of the Board of Directors comprised of community residents. They are active on Board committees and in all phases of the development, management and governance of NeighborWorks New Horizons properties, which instills a strong sense of ownership and community. NWNH brings together the skills and interests of residents, representatives of the community, business, and government to help forge strong communities that are responsive to the needs of working families and individuals.

NWNH is a charter member of the NeighborWorks America, a national nonprofit, established in 1978 by Congress with a mission to revitalize and restore neighborhoods. NWNH is also a part of NeighborWorks', a national network of partnership organizations of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation that receive valuable resources including technical assistance, opportunities to attend industry conferences and training, as well as financial assistance.

NWNH has established the following goals as a means of achieving our mission:

  1. Increase the availability of permanently affordable quality housing and safe living environments;
  2. Create the opportunities for and develop the capacities of residents to be active citizens in their communities;
  3. Provide strong property management with active resident leadership;
  4. Build long-term partnerships within South Central and Southeastern Connecticut to support the development of healthy communities;
  5. Develop cultural, educational, childcare and youth programs for Mutual Housing Residents and the community at large;
  6. Provide residents with economic and homeownership opportunities; and
  7. Build a strong, financially sound, vibrant "learning" organization.

  8. History:
    Founded in 1992, the Mutual Housing Association of South Central Connecticut, Inc. dba NeighborWorks new Horizons is a 501 (c)(3) private nonprofit membership organization.

    In the past 15 years, NWNH has grown rapidly by increasing permanently affordable quality housing owned and/or managed from 58 to 240 units and launching 11 new projects including the development of elderly, artist, affordable homeownership and supportive housing projects.
