History:
Catholic Charities, Inc. is a family and children's human services agency under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Hartford. Since its inception in 1920 as the Diocesan Bureau of Social Services, Catholic Charities has responded to the ever-changing needs of children, teens, adults and families without regard to race, religion or economic circumstances. During the latter half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, a number of Catholic hospitals and homes for children and the elderly were founded. Although funded almost entirely by the Catholic Church, these institutions were open to all people regardless of religion. The Diocesan Bureau was founded in 1920 to give direction to all Catholic charities in Conn. The Bureau also evaluated social conditions affecting the population and developed new services to meet those emerging needs. The Bureau's emphasis was always on child and family welfare, and its name was changed to Catholic Family Services to reflect that focus. The complexities of serving the indigent were recognized and trained social workers were engaged to administer agency programs. The Great Depression and World War II saw increasing needs in America and Catholic Family Services began to rapidly expand. Catholic Charities and Catholic Family Services have been united and are now all known as Catholic Charities, Inc. Archdiocese of Hartford.
