We support community health centers in their efforts improve the quality and availability of primary health care services for underserved people in Maine.
Description:
The members of the Primary Care Association (PCA) are community health centers, Indian health centers, and island health centers. The people they serve are medically underserved, whether because of socio-economic or cultural barriers or geographic location. The PCA helps them in their constant effort to stay current with medical best practices, to become organizationally more efficient, and to improve their connections with their communities. Community outreach is especially important to our volunteer efforts because it is an area where volunteers can make a significant difference in the quality of health care available in a community. Community supports are critical for healing or managing the chronic diseases that are today's most widespread medical problems. A wide variety of services are needed to supplement the health care provided by community health centers, hospitals, and other medical practices, and many community-based organizations exist to provide those services. Because resources are scarce for in most communities, volunteers have many opportunities to make a significant difference in people's lives.
History:
The Maine Primary Care Association was first organized about 1986 as the Maine Ambulatory Care Coalition. It was part of a nation-wide movement to create a medical safety-net for people without ready access to other health care facilities. The goal is to provide a medical home for each patient, so that the continuity of relationships between doctors and patients that is needed for maintaining health over time is nurtured and supported.
