· increase students' academic achievement; and

Description:
SAFE and SMART operates an afterschool and summer program at Reiche Elementary School. Program activities focus on:
· academic development in core subjects, especially reading, writing, and math;
· nutrition, fitness, and well-being (including physical activity);
· cultural enrichment;
· exposure to the visual and performing arts; and
· family engagement.

Reiche's after school program serves students in grades 2-5 and runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 3-5 pm. The program runs October - May.

Typically, the summer program runs for 4-5 weeks and begins in July.

Eligible students at receive a snack (and breakfast and lunch during the summer) and transportation home each day.

History:
Project SAFE and SMART is funded primarily through a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant. Reiche has had a program since the fall of 2000. Therefore, we rely on the help of volunteers to ensure that our programs run smoothly and that students have as much support from caring adults as possible.
