Pine Tree’s mission is to promote access to justice by providing high quality free legal assistance responsive to the immediate needs of individual low income clients and to address the long-range barriers to justice affecting low income people in Maine.

Description:
Pine Tree Legal Assistance is a statewide legal service provider for low-income Mainers, with 6 locations around Maine, as well as several exciting specialized projects. Pine Tree provides free individual representation in our core services areas such as housing, health care, and income. Pine Tree also provides outreach and community education, works with entities that serve low income people, including social service providers, members of the private bar and the court system. In addition Pine Tree manages several important projects including a Farmworker Unit, Native American Unit, KIDS LEGAL, Low Income Taxpayer Clinic a Family Law project, and a Foreclosure Prevention project. The Augusta office serves three counties in central Maine (and works on a broad range on general legal services cases including rental housing, foreclosures and predatory lending, fair housing issues, public benefits, consumer law, advocacy for persons with disabilities and victims of domestic violence, in judicial and administrative forums.

History:
Pine Tree Legal Assistance first opened its doors in 1967 to address the legal needs of low-income residents in Maine. Pine Tree advocates have helped to change the world in which we live through our commitment to equal access to justice for all. The abolition of debtor’s prison, the right to due process and a fair hearing, the first successful employment discrimination lawsuits, improved housing codes and accessibility for people with disabilities are all legacies of Pine Tree’s commitment to individual clients who sought our help, one person at a time.
