The mission of 2-1-1 Maine is to connect anyone in Maine who wants to give help or get help with a full range of health and human services in their community.
Description:
One number – thousands of services. 2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember number that connects people who want to give help or get help with a full range of health and human services in their community. In establishing 2-1-1, Maine joins a growing national movement to standardize the availability of information and referral for these services. 2-1-1 includes a statewide-directory of over 8800 resources including agency services and support groups accessible through the website to anyone with Internet capability. The 2-1-1 Call Center is accessible statewide and from cell phones and phone service provided by Internet carriers. 2-1-1 provides emergency operations during times of natural and other disasters, includes accurate and timely information for preparations, and longer term referral for follow-up services if required. 2-1-1 provides valuable information for community planning and for future matching of resource development and unmet needs. 2-1-1 Maine is a collaborative effort of YAI, the United Ways of Maine, and the State of Maine. 2-1-1 Maine is a partner of VolunteerMaine.
History:
In July 2000, the 10 United Ways in Maine, state agency representatives and Ingraham formed a task force. They reviewed various models and surveyed information and referral services in Maine. In March 2003, 2-1-1 Maine, Inc. was incorporated, based on a consensus model with a central call center and regional resource coordinators. Over the next 18 months, working with an Advisory Board and Provider Council, 2-1-1 Maine, Inc. focused on building a statewide database and obtaining state designation. On June 27, 2005, 2-1-1 Maine, Inc. received designation from the Maine Public Utility Commission as the “sole entity entitled to use the 211 numbering code for access to information and referral services in Maine.”
