Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence

MCAHV seeks to reduce handgun violence in Maine through increased public awareness of the role of handguns in domestic violence, teenage suicide, crime in Maine and elsewhere, and the consequent importance of supporting new laws that will restrict handgun ownership to those who are responsible and mentally competent.

Description:
MCAHV seeks to organize and unite Maine citizens concerned about gun violence in their community to make Maine a national leader in adopting sensible gun laws supported by hunters, sportsmen and the general public, and rising above the tired rhetoric of the gun law debate that has polarized opinion and stalled progress for more than twenty years. Maine has an honorable tradition of independent and sensible thinking that can become the foundation for a national consensus that Second Amendment rights, like most others, are balanced with a responsibility to care for the public as well. MCAHV depends upon members and donors to accomplish these goals.

History:
MCAHV was formed in 2000 following the gun tragedy at Columbine High School. Buzz Fitzgerald, then CEO of Bath Iron Works, and several other community leaders were moved to take action to prevent, in-so-far as possible, a similar tragedy in Maine. The organization has a membership of a few hundred, a Board of fifteen members and a part-time Director.
