The Friends of Fort Knox mission is to preserve/restore Fort Knox and enhance its educational, cultural and economic value to the people of Maine.

Description:
The Friends of Fort Knox are engaged in ongoing restoration and preservation of the State Historic Site.

The Friends provide visitor services by providing interpretive tours, operating a gift shop, greeting visitors and conducting a variety of special events.

Volunteers are trained to interpret the rich history of Fort Knox and the Penobscot River area.

History:
The Friends of Fort Knox were formed by volunteers in 1991, when the Fort was in danger of closing due to serious roof deterioration. The organization rallied the community/state and raised funds to fix the Fort roof.

The Friends second project was the complete restoration of the Fort torpedo storage shed and adjacent area. The project included installation of interior/exterior interpretive panels, handicapped parking/restrooms, an outdoor granite amphitheater and multi media equipment.

The Friends are currently working on the restoration of the Fort Officer's Quarters. The area has been closed to the public for decades due to rotting wood and masonry deterioration.
