[ View Opportunity | View Requested Item ]
Last updated on June 19, 2008

The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District's mission is to be a leader in agriculture, forestry, and other natural resource education, providing assistance and coordination of resources and information to promote practices that maintain our way of life.

Description:
Throughout the year we host guest speakers and sponsor workshops for all ages on a variety of natural resource topics. This summer we are featuring Natural Resources Summer Camp for children ages 7 - 12, education through our Demonstration Forest, a Gravel Roads Maintenance and Repair Workshop, and workshops geared towards Watershed protection. In the fall we will be hosting an Open House at our Demonstration Forest. In the Spring we host a Vernal Pool Workshop, a Tree and Shrub sale, and a Trout Sale for Stocking ponds.

History:
Soil and Water Conservation Districts were created in every state in response to the "Dust Bowl" of the 1930's. "A nation who destroys it's soil destroys itself" according to Franklin D. Roosevelt as he enacted legislation to create these districts. This statement was later amended to include the importance of protecting our water as well. Each district makes itself available to landowners to provide assistance, and coordination of resources and information to protect our natural resources.
