Our mission is to improve people's lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities. The United Way of Greater Portland brings people from all walks of life together to work to find solutions to health and human service issues facing the community.

Description:
The United Way of Greater Portland is a catalyst for change in the business of caring. We look for approaches that have not yet been taken. We explore alternatives and seek new ways to solve community problems. We put contributions, volunteers, and staff to work, to make the greatest difference in improving our community.

History:
United Way of Greater Portland was established in 1930, under the leadership and foresight of Walter G. Davis. Known as the Portland Community Chest, our first campaign raised just over $200,000, and was distributed to 18 charter agencies.
Over the years Portland has grown, and so have our community's needs, our resources, and the United Way of Greater Portland. In the last year alone, businesses, individuals, and organizations contributed more than $8.5 million, supporting more than 100 local programs and services.
With our supporters and volunteers, United Way is building self-confidence in children, preventing senior citizens from being evicted from their homes, and cooking up hot meals for our homeless. In all, 150,000 calls for support, strength, and help are being answered. United Way of Greater Portland is building a stronger, safer, and healthier community.
