The Iris Network UW Funded Agencies
Last updated on October 14, 2008

Our mission is: to empower persons who are blind or visually impaired to attain their self-determined level of independence and integration into the community; to provide rehabilitation, training, education and related services for individuals, their families, and other support systems; and to be a resource regarding issues related to blindness and visual impairment within the State of Maine.

Description:
The purpose of our services is to provide adults who are blind or visually impaired with the tools and skills necessary to function as independent as they wish within their home, community and work place. Towards this end, our staff provides rehabilitation and social services, instruction on "talking" or large print computers, temporary residence while attending classes, recreation and leisure activities, and reading of local community newspapers and news through our Maine AIRS program.

History:
The Iris Network (formerly Maine Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired) was founded by William J. Ryan in 1905. The Iris Network provides services for people who are blind or visually impaired throughout the state of Maine through 9 regional offices.
