Mission Statement: The Time Bank is a service exchange based on Time Dollars, the currency of equality that empowers individuals to utilize their assets, to enhance their lives, neighborhood and community.

Description:
The Portland Time Bank is a membership organization where services are exchanged for Time Dollars. For every hour of service provided to another Time Bank member you earn one Time Dollar. Time Dollars are a community currency that members earn by using their time, energy, skills, and talents to help others. These service exchanges enhance their lives, save cash dollars and build relationships with neighbors. Every hour of service is valued equally, hour for hour.

Time Banking is about local individuals, organizations or business’s helping each other in one-to–one exchanges or in group projects. Members help rebuild neighborhood networks and strengthen communities.

You, the Member can spend your Time Dollars on any number of services such as tickets to events, minor home repair, health care, computer assistance, music lessons, voice lessons, transportation, haircuts, and English tutoring. You can even save them up for future use. Members of Portland Time Bank help each other in ways that family and neighbors have traditionally done.

It’s your choice, it’s your time!

History:
The Portland Time Bank was founded in 1997 (formerly Maine Time Dollar Network) by local activist and physician Dr. Richard Rockefeller after he met and was inspired by the movement’s founder, Dr. Edgar Cahn. Currently there are over 700 active members choosing from a menu directory with more than 800 service selections. In 2006, members exchanged over 20,000 hours of services!

Join the Portland Time Bank today. There is no limit to the number of members in this growing organization. Share your time with others and help enrich our community with your friendship.
