The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad inspires pride in Maine's industrial heritage. We operate historic two foot gauge trains, conduct tours of our museum collection, and provide educational programs at the Portland waterfront.
Description:
The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad is an volunteer organization that collects, preserves, displays, interprets, and operates historic railroad equipment from Maine's two-foot-gauge railways. Cars and locomotives date from the 1880's to the 1940s. Visitors from all over the world and school children throughout the area experience the innovative alternative to horse and buggy.
History:
The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad was established in 1992 to preserve the collection of trains that originally serviced 5 rural areas in Maine. For 8 years the founders and volunteers have provided 3 mile rides along the Portland waterfront. In 2002, 22,000 people rode on our antique trains and visited the museum.
