Maine Preservation

Agency Details:

Maine Preservation

Maine Preservation promotes the preservation, protection and vitality of Maine's historic places and encourages quality design that contributes to the livability of our communities.

Description:
For 35 years, Maine Preservation has been at the forefront of preservation issues, advocating for the protection and preservation of Maine's irreplaceable historic resources. We are a private non-profit membership organization with an expansive statewide constituency of individuals, groups, organizations, agencies, appointed and elected officials. We are a Statewide Partner to the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

History:
The organization began in 1970 at an initial informal gathering in Hallowell. The group formed because of a need for a statewide organization to encourage the recognition and preservation of Maine's historic environment. In 1971, the organization was officially formed as "Maine Citizens for Historic Preservation," which launched a successful campaign to urge the state to create the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, part of the State of Maine's government. Maine Preservation has also sponsored annual conferences at various statewide locations. Maine Preservation has published a newsletter as a forum for information about activities in local areas, strategies for restoring and protecting threatened buildings and sites, and reports on what the State programs are accomplishing.
