Spring Harbor, in collaboration with Maine Medical Center's Department of Psychiatry, offers Maine's most complete range of clinically distinguished and innovative treatment programs for people of all ages who experience mental illness and dual disorders. Our compassionate, respectful care honors the dignity, privacy, and recovery needs of each person and is continuously enhanced by clinical training and medical research.
Description:
Spring Harbor Hospital is a not-for-profit 100-bed specialty hospital in Westbrook, Maine, that serves people of all ages who experience acute episodes of mental illness and chemical dependency. The hospital features a children's unit, a new unit for children with mental retardation and developmental disorders and co-occuring mental illness, 2 adolescent units, and 4 adult care units. Spring Harbor is the only freestanding mental health hospital in southern Maine, providing care to both voluntary and involuntary patients. Staff of Spring Harbor include physicians, nurses, clinical social workers and others who specialize in providing expert care to those experiencing mental illness and substance abuse issues. Spring Harbor also houses a number of traditional hospital departments, including staff development, medical records, dietary services, human resources, and accounting. Volunteer opportunities are presently available on our units, in our onsite classrooms, and in our non-patient care settings (such as the departments listed above).
History:
Spring Harbor is Maine's newest mental health hospital. Purchased in 1999 by Maine Medical Center, Spring Harbor was located for five years on the site formerly known as Jackson Brook Institute (JBI), the for-profit psychiatric hospital of South Portland that opened in 1984. Formerly a subsidiary of Maine Medical Center, Spring Harbor became an affiliate of the MaineHealth integrated healthcare delivery system in October of 2001. Spring Harbor continues to partner with Maine Medical Center's Department of Psychiatry to offer a comprehensive network of mental health and dual diagnosis services in greater Portland. Spring Harbor Hospital recently moved into its brand new, state of the art treatment facility off outer Congress Street in Westbrook on March 10, 2004.
