The mission of Southern Maine Agency on Aging is to assure that older people in southern Maine, especially those who are frail, isolated, or living on low incomes, receive the support necessary to maintain their independence in the community.

Description:
Area Agencies on Aging were created by federal legislation called the Older Americans Act in 1972 to serve as focal points for information and assistance for people age 60 and over in a defined geographic region. Southern Maine Agency on Aging is designated to serve York and Cumberland counties (excluding Brunswick and Harpswell). We provide Information & Advocacy to help seniors and their families find and access benefit programs and resources that can help them age with dignity and independence. In addition, we provide specific services such as Meals On Wheels and Senior Dining Centers, Congregate Housing Services, Bill-Paying Assistance, Minor Home Maintenance and Repair, and Grocery Shopping. All these services are provided with the help of lots of volunteers.

History:
Southern Maine Agency on Aging began service as the designated Area Agency on Aging for York and Cumberland counties (excluding Brunswick and Harpswell) in 1972. Among the Agency's first programs were the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Meals On Wheels. The Outreach and Advocacy and Care Management Programs soon followed. The Truslow Adult Day Center was begun in the early 1980's. More recent additions to the services have included grocery shopping, minor home maintenance and repair and bill-paying assistance. Today, Southern Maine Agency on Aging provides assistance to thousands of seniors in southern Maine each year.
