Pine Tree Legal Assistance
Warning: This listing is no longer actively maintained. The information below is likely to be out of date.
Last updated on March 24, 2008

The Portland office of Pine Tree Legal Assistance seeks to provide limited free legal services to low-income people in the southern and central counties of Maine. Volunteers are needed to help make the connection between those in need and the services that might be available.

Description:
Volunteers interview low-income people in need of legal assistance. Access to the legal system is often limited by an inability to pay for representation. As the vital link to a variety of legal and community services, the volunteer has an opportunity to provide much needed assistance while learning about the law. The primary focus is on landlord-tenant conflicts, evictions, public benefit problems, domestic violence issues and some related family law matters.

History:
Pine Tree Legal Assistance is the largest legal service provider for low-income individuals in Maine. It was established in 1965 and has 7 offices throughout the state. The offices are located in Portland, Lewiston, Augusta, Bangor, Rockland, Machias and Presque Isle.
