"To promote public safety by ensuring that juvenile offenders are provided with education, treatment and other services that teach skills and competencies; strengthen pro-social behaviors and require accountability to victims and communities."
Description:
Long Creek Youth Development Center is the detention facility for juveniles in the southern part of Maine. Juveniles are committed to Long Creek and must complete a comprehensive program of rehabilitation in order to return to the community. Long Creek has an on grounds educational facility, therapists, psychologists, substance abuse clinicians and groups, religious services and supports as well as a variety of recreational and pro-social groups and activities. The role of a VOLUNTEER at Long Creek can be key to helping a young person change their life for the better.
We are looking for adult volunteers to fill the roles of 1:1 MENTORS with juveniles, TUTORS for juveniles in the areas of reading/language arts, math, GED preparation and some undergraduate college study. We are also looking for adult individuals or GROUPS who are interested in doing projects such as an art program, reading group or recreational event with the juveniles at Long Creek.
We are looking for a commitment of once a week at least for individual mentors and tutors and we are looking for the commitment to last at least one year or the length of stay of the juvenile that you are working with.
History:
Since 1854 We have been providing services to juveniles between the ages of 11 and 21 years old. To date we have served just over 20,000 juveniles through the juvenile justice system.
