Building houses in partnership with God's people in need - one home at a time. Serving the greater Bangor and Brewer area.
Description:
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor, Inc. is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with local people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses are then sold to qualifying families at no profit and with no interest charged, allowing many to enjoy the pride and dignity of home-ownership. Without Habitat for Humanity's program, these families might not otherwise be able to own a home through traditional means. Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their interest-free mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
History:
Originally founded in 1988, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor has completed 11 houses to date, and is presently at work on the 12th.
