The Bangor Humane Society is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to the humane treatment of all pets through education, advocacy and quality care.
•

Description:
We house and care for abused unwanted and homeless animals.
We educate the public and provide necessary services to promote positive pet ownership.
We advocate for public policy that promotes the humane treatment of all animals.
We carefully match companion animals with forever homes for a quality and nurturing lifestyle for both pet and owner.

History:
Founded in 1869, the Bangor Humane Society has in the past cared for children, agricultural animals and companion animals. As the State took over responsibility for child and agricultural animal welfare, the Society now focuses on pets, mainly dogs and cats. At one time, the Society handled over 10,000 unwanted dogs and cats each year. Now the figure is half that, but there are still far more homeless animals than adoptive homes for them. Following a capital campaign and with the support of the Whitley Foundation, the Society built a state of the art animal shelter on Mount Hope Avenue in 1997. Currently the shelter has a staff of 12 but relies heavily on its dedicated volunteers to fulfill its mission.
