United Way of Mid-Maine is a community impact organization. We bring communities together to focus on the most important human needs. This includes building partnerships, forging consensus and leveraging resources to make a measurable difference

Values:
Integrity, Impact, Volunteerism, Inclusiveness, Catalytic Leadership.

History:
United Way was established on a national level in 1887 because people were in need of services to help them get through difficult times. It also was established because multiple organizations were knocking on the doors of prospective contributors. Some of those contributors felt a need to have one organization arrange and direct an annual appeal that would support health and human services.

In 1953, the United Way of Mid-Maine, Inc. was formed as the Community Chest/Red Feather by a sub-committee of the Chamber of Commerce. Attorney Edmund S. Muskie chaired this sub-committee. Other committee members were: Attorney Cyril M. Joly, Jr, Ralph H. Cutting, Melvin A. Moore, and Robert A. Dexter. In the early 70's, the name was changed to United Way. Mid-Maine United Way encompasses an area that includes northern Kennebec County, Somerset County, and four towns in Waldo county. The local United Way was established because of a growing demand for a more orderly way to contribute to health, and human services. In 1953, the first annual appeal generated about $35,000.
