The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine grants the wishes of children living with life-threatening medical conditions, to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
Description:
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine is a statewide organization based in Camden, with an office Portland as well. We grant wishes to children between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18, who have life-threatening medical conditions (as confirmed by their doctor), and have never had a wish granted before. Every child that meets the simple eligibility requirements is granted a wish. The Foundation relies heavily on volunteer support, for everything from helping out with fund-raising events, office help, public speaking engagements and wish granting. Funds to support the organization are raised through the generosity of individuals and businesses, and through events conducted by us and by outside community groups. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and all contributions are tax deductible.
History:
The Make-A-Wish Foundation was started in April of 1980 when officers of the Arizona Dept. of Public Safety granted the wish of 7-year old Chris, who was living with leukemia, to be a police officer for a shirt time. The power of that wish in his life provided the inspiration for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Today, there are 74 chapters across the US and 28 international affiliates. The Maine chapter of Make-A-Wish was founded in 1992 by Caroline and Wayne Morong of Camden. Since 1992, the Foundation has granted over 570 wishes to children throughout the State of Maine.
