The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Chapter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

Description:
Our agency has four main departments, Blood Services, Afes (Armed Forces Emergency Services), Disaster Services and Health & Safety. Our Blood Services provides support to Northern New England Blood Services by providing facilities and staff to; organize volunteers, promote blood drives and recruit blood donors. Afes (Armed Forces Emergency Services)is a "24/7" communication service in place to connect military authorities, military service personnel, red Cross workers and local families that are in need of help. Disaster Services is a "24/7", 365 day program that responds within 2 hour of being notified of a disaster. Disaster Relief Staff and/or volunteers will respond to disaster victim's needs by providing emergency and temporary necessities of food, clothing, shelter and if needed, counseling. our Health & Safety Service provides both certified and non-certifed classes and training in First Aid, CPR, AED Training, Babysitter's training, Lifeguard training, Water Safety and HIV/AIDS. Classes and trainings take place at the work site, schools, community organizations and at the Chapters facilities.

History:
On May 21, 1881, Clara Barton was joined by Senator Omar Conger of Michigan and 22 others at her own modest residence to form the American Association of the Red Cross. Barton lobbied tirelessly for the United States' ratification of the Geneva Convention, also known as the treaty of Geneva, which was signed in March 1882. Unlike the International Red Cross, which provided only battlefield relief, Barton's society served America in war and in peace, and especially in times of disaster and national calamity, which Barton later stated was "the mainspring of all American work for the Red Cross."
