The Pine Tree State Arboretum's mission is to promote the knowledge and appreciation of Maine's trees and other flora for people of all ages by offering educational, recreational, and inspirational opportunities.

Description:
The Pine Tree State Arboretum is a nonprofit membership organization featuring numerous plant and tree collections, and 6 miles of trails for hiking, biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and nature watching on 224 acres in Maine“s capital city, Augusta. The Arboretum offers workshops and classes to its members and the public and offers outdoor education programs to school and homeschool children during the school year.

History:
From 1840 to 1972, the land that is now the Arboretum was part of the Augusta Mental Health Institute's working farm. In 1981 the Maine Forest Service began development of the arboretum. During that year, 120 trees were planted, and construction of fences, bridges, trails, and a boardwalk began. In 1982, an independent, nonprofit corporation, the Pine Tree State Arboretum, was formed to manage the 224 acre parcel. In 1990, the Viles Visitor Center was built and the Trees & Woodlands Education Wing was added in 2003.
