The primary mission of Literacy Volunteers of Greater Saco-Biddeford (LVGSB) is to train volunteers to provide educational programs and services that improve reading, writing and related literacy skills, and to empower adults by enhancing their life skills in the area of family, work, health and community.
Description:
Our purpose is to train dedicated volunteers to provide literacy tutoring, English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and adult education classroom support to low and non-literate adults from Biddeford, Saco and the surrounding communities.
LVGSB offers free, confidential, student-centered, individual and small group tutoring to adults seeking to improve literacy skills most often related to improving job skills, parenting skills, and general life management skills such as keeping a bank account or daily calendar. We support adult learners in achieving personal life goals by increasing literacy competencies specifically in the area of reading, comprehension, writing, verbal communication, computer skills and math. LVGSB serves 35-50 adults annually - both those whose first language is English and those foreign born adults who must learn English to take part in every day life, attain citizenship and find employment.
History:
LVGSB was established in 1973 and is a nationally accredited member of ProLiteracy America. (Formerly Literacy Volunteers of America) Literacy Volunteers of Greater Saco-Biddeford has served the basic literacy needs of low and non-literate adults in Saco, Biddeford and the surrounding communities for 30 years. Our services are in great demand because we are sensitive to the obstacles of poverty, language minority, family needs and disability that make attending class in traditional institutions difficult.
Last year our trained volunteer tutors were able to serve 48 adult learners, which represents a total of 1,342 volunteer hours valued at $23,551.
