Description:
AWS is an open-admission shelter. We take owner surrender animals. The shelter contracts with 17 different towns and cities to accept their stray or abandoned animals. The shelter works closely with state humane officials from the Animal Welfare Program and local animal control officers to provide housing and veterinary care for animals confiscated due to neglect or abuse.

History:
The Animal Welfare Society, located in West Kennebunk on Old Holland Road, is a private, non-profit, humane society formed in the early 1960's by a group of caring individuals. The founders included the late Mrs. Elmina B. Sewall and the late Mr. Donald Shephard who served as the Society's first President of the Board of Directors. In 1967, the Society became incorporated and has now expanded to a shelter of over 13,000 square feet. Our service area for adoptions and other services extends throughout Southern Maine. We provide municipal shelter services to 17 communities representing a population of nearly 150,000 people.
