Who We Are
We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that sponsors a true no-kill shelter for homeless cats and kittens, located in Norway, Maine.
Our shelter is equipped to provide treatment for 85+ cats at any one time, and is always full to capacity. We take in and adopt an average of 300 cats per year. All cats leave the shelter healthy, spayed/neutered, FeLV/FIV tested, vaccinated and treated for internal and external parasites. We work closely with the local veterinarians who provide the medical attention that the cats require. Sadly we turn many cats away due to lack of space. Our goal is to increase the adoption rate, allowing us to take in and save more cats. As a true no-kill shelter we do have a higher percentage of special needs cats than most other shelters. Some cats have been with us for years and we will continue to care for them until they are adopted. The majority of our feline guests reside in single cat cages, although we do have some larger cat condos and a large cat housing structure that can hold 5 cats. In 2004 we were able to turn a dream into a reality with the transformation of The Cat Community Room. The "Free Room" allows for 15 of our more sociable felines to interact with each other as well as our staff and visitors without the restrictions of cage walls and doors. This wonderful new space has resulted in a much less stressful environment and a more enjoyable adoption experience for both our feline guests and human visitors.
The majority of the funds needed to support the shelter and carry out our mission come from fund-raisers and donations from private individuals.
Our organization is run with the hard work of 8 part-time staff members as well as numerous volunteers. We operate under the guidance of a Board of Directors who meet on a monthly basis. New volunteers are always welcome.
At this time we do not have enough volunteer support to allow us to take in dogs and puppies at our shelter. However, we do work with other shelters to help dogs and puppies in need. We often assist in coordinating placement of pets that can remain in-home until an alternate home can be found. When possible, we also work with the victims of abuse to provide temporary housing for their cats during transitional periods.
History:
In 1999 a small grassroots effort was started to try and find a way to provide shelter and place homes for stray cats. Thanks to the community and private donations we now have a animal shelter that is able to provide a safe place for the cats to live while waiting for adoption. We are a NO Kill shelter.
In 2005 we converted an adjacent building into a thrift shop to help support the shelter. We accept donations of new and/or used items (no clothing) and resell them to the public at a very reasonable price. This venture has proved very successful and draws many people to the shelter and thrift shop.
