If a major emergency occurred in our community would you be able to help? The Western Maine Medical Reserve Corps is looking for volunteers to assist existing services when they are overwhelmed. We need both medical and support volunteers. Mass Prophylaxis Clinics (MPC) - When an infectious disease threatens our area, Maine CDC may require that citizens be vaccinated or provided medicine to prevent transmission. In such times, hospitals would likely be busy tending to patients already infected. We need volunteers to help operate vaccination clinics to provide the public with preventative medication and education. Some of the positions that need to be filled in these clinics include: Greeter, Medical Screener, Intake Clerk, Forms Review Clerk, Medical Dispensing, Pharmacy Staff, Special Needs Staff, Interpreter, Traffic Control, Security, and Communications. We also need people to manage the paperwork and enter data into computers. Special Needs Shelters (SpNS) – There are many people in our community who cannot utilize typical emergency shelters. They include people who require medical and personal hygiene assistance, those who have difficulty in crowds and noisy areas, and those with mental/behavioral health challenges. When an evacuation is necessary, provisions need to be made to care for these people. We will be working with the Red Cross and CERT teams to provide areas at existing shelters that would be appropriate for these populations. Some of the positions that need to be filled in a special needs shelter include: CNA/PCAs, Behavioral and Mental Health Workers, Crisis Counselors, Substance Abuse Support Workers, Spiritual & Cultural Support, and Medical Care Providers. Alternate Care Facilities (ACF) - When hospitals are overwhelmed, they may need to open alternate locations to care for the less serious patients. These may be a wing of a school or an auditorium. In addition to those needed for a Mass Prophylaxis Clinic, an ACF requires many more caregivers to provide 24 hour care to the injured and ill. Along with medical providers, an ACF requires: Unit Secretaries, Case Manager, Social Worker, Housekeepers, Lab, Medical Assistant/ Phlebotomy, Food Service, Chaplain/Pastoral, Day Care/Pet Care, Engineering/ Maintenance, Biomed, Security and Patient Transporters.
Team members will undergo screening and core training. Those with prior or current medical training will have their credentials verified. While we have a variety of opportunities, the safety of those for whom we provide care is a priority. Persons who might present a risk to that safety may not clear the screening process. Our training program consists of 5 hours of live modules presented on weekends and weekday evenings. Online training is available for busy computer savvy volunteers. The modules include Personal Preparedness, Orientation to the Program, Intro to PFA (managing stress) and specific modules involving the functions we perform.
